How To Do The Backstroke

Each swimming stroke has necessary techniques that have to be mastered in order to be proficient in movement.

When performed correctly, backstroke can be the most elegant and relaxed-looking of all the strokes. However, if a good head-neck-back relationship is not maintained, it becomes disorganized and awkward.

Some swimmers pull their head right back so that their eyes are focused on a point behind them, which can cause the back to arch unduly and water to spill over the face. Others crane their heads forward too far in an attempt to hold their face out of the water. This compresses the chest and puts a strain on the neck muscles.

swimmingPerforming The Moves

Push off from the poolside on your back, hands resting by your side. Your body should be slightly angled to one side. Release your neck-muscles, letting your ears submerge, and discover how effectively the water can support your head if you allow it to.

Experiment with minor changes in the angle of your neck to see how they can affect the way you float, noticing how holding up the head requires more effort than releasing the neck-muscles.

Perform the same procedure with one hand gently supporting the back of your neck. With your hand feel the tone of the muscles in your neck as you experiment with different angles.

Perform the procedure this time with one arm extended behind you as you glide. Notice how much easier it is to float with the weight of the arm helping to balance the body along its length. Does this position have any effect on the sensation of release in your neck-muscles?

backstrokeBreathing Techniques

Backstroke is the only stroke that let’s you breathe at your leisure; use this to your advantage. Not only does the extra oxygen give you the stamina to swim longer, but it can help keep you afloat. By regularly taking deep breaths, you fill your stomach with air, which helps keep the lower half of your body on the surface of the water.

To conclude, the backstroke is not an impossible swimming style to do. With a lot of practice and perseverance, you too can master this elegant style.

What is your favorite swimming style when exercising at home or at the local pool? When learning the backstroke, what were some of the obstacles that you faced? Let us know what you think below.

How To Choose The Right Pair Of Shades

Sunglasses come in a wide range of colors and sizes. Choosing the right ones can protect your eyes for a longer period of time, without needing to carry an extra pair.

First, make sure that your sunglasses are UV resistant. The information is usually found in the label. Next, the size of your shades must cover your eyes, including odd angles of light where sunlight can penetrate. This might mean getting a slightly bigger pair over slim fits.

When it comes to the color, darker isn’t always better. As long as the UV protection label is present in the lens, you’re good to go. Dark shades may prevent you from seeing clearly, which is why people opt for blue, or light brown.

Don’t forget to choose a frame that is stable for your lifestyle. Those who move around a lot usually go for thick frames with cushions, while those who are lounging around may lean towards thin, wire frames.

Once you have the basics covered, all you have to do make sure you wear your sunglasses consistently. Even cloudy days can harm your eyes; therefore, don’t forget to have them on at all times. Just like sunscreen, your eyes need constant care.

In order to stay active in the summer, individuals must pair their activities with a healthy diet. Eating healthy doesn’t mean that one has to go on a hunger strike.

Stress and Weight Loss

Swim Longer, Faster With These Tips

In order to get better at swimming you need to train outside of the pool. Two of the best exercises that one should consider is jogging and stretching.

Both exercises can boost one’s cardio capacity and develop better breathing techniques. It can also keep you relaxed in the water, allowing you to do more laps in the process.

Below are tips on how to perform each exercise effectively and safely.

Different fitness activities recruit different muscle groups. Concentrate on the range of motions and the muscle groups that you’re likely to use in your fitness activity. When starting to stretch, be mindful that you move into that stretch very slowly and in a controlled fashion.

It takes time to lengthen tissue safely. Hold your stretches between 15-30 seconds all the way up to a minute with particularly tight muscles or problem areas.

Stretching a cold muscle can strain and irritate the tissue. Warm up first. It’s most beneficial to stretch after your fitness routine, when the muscle is heated by blood flow and is more accommodating of a stretch. If you like to stretch before working out to warm up, consider active stretching.

Bouncing can cause damage to the muscle, which must heal itself with scar tissue. The scar tissue tightens the muscle, making you less flexible and more prone to pain. Once you’ve mastered stretching, it’s time to move on to jogging.

Unless you have regularly been running, jogging or walking outdoors during the colder months you will need to adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Consistency is the key to any exercise plan. Try exercising 4-6 days a week on a regular basis.

  • Build up slowly. Be able to comfortably go for a certain distance, time and intensity before increasing. Increases should only be about 10-15% per week.

  • Don’t do just one activity. Doing one activity every day is one of the biggest causes of injury. Mix up running or jogging with days of biking, swimming, team sports, stretching and weights or other activities.

  • If something starts to hurt, stop doing it. Either do another athletic activity that doesn’t hurt or stop exercising completely for a few days. Pushing through pain can easily sabotage your exercise program.

Some swimming pool lights need to be changed. These days, due to LED technology, the frequency of changing a bulb is a lot less. However, it is still important to know how to remove the bulb incase you want to change the color of the lighting.

Dealing with water and electricity always adds an extra danger factor. One should always exercise precaution and use the right equipment. When in doubt, call you local pool builder for assistance to prevent injury.

Check the circuit breaker

The first thing you will need to do is to make sure that the circuit breaker is not tripped. If the circuit breaker is tripped, turn off the light to the pool and try turning on the circuit breaker. If it trips immediately, you have a short circuit, in which case you need to get an electrician to correct this problem. If the circuit breaker is not tripped, you can now proceed to check the GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter).

After you’ve assessed that you need to change the pool light you need to do the following steps before removing the bulb:

  1. Turn off power from the electrical box

  2. Double check that the power is off by flipping the pool light switch

Removing the lights

Remove the screws from the outer layer of the bulb. Next, pry open the casing using a flat head screwdriver. The best place do this is from the bottom of the casing. Never chip away at the side of the outer layer. Instead, loosen the case slowly and it will eventually pop out.

Changing the bulb

Once the casing is out, pull it out of the water. From there, proceed to unscrew the other parts and change the bulb as you would normally. Next, go to the electrical box and briefly on the lights to check if the lights turn on.

Once you’ve done this, all you have to do is turn off the electrical box again and put back the bulb in the pool. Screw on the casing and turn on the electrical box again one last time.

Don’t forget to use reliable tools to make the task safer and faster. You should always change bulbs with a friend around for accountability.

How To Get The Most Out Of Sunblock

In preparation for summer, most people put away their jackets and exchange them for shirts and a pair of shorts. This can lead to more sun exposure, leaving you sunburned at the end of the day.

If you’ve ever used sunblock, you would know that it can be difficult to get right. With so many different types out there how will you know which one to use?

Today I will highlight tips on what to look out for when buying your first bottle of sunblock, how to apply the product correctly, and other essential information you might need to know.

Buying Sunblock

When it comes to SPF levels, one should consider investing in heavy sunblock for long sun exposure. No one is really only out for 15 minutes at a time. Therefore, SPF 30 and above is highly recommended. Superior sunblock includes protection from UVA and UVB. Such bottles contain avobenzone (Parsol 1789), zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

Reapply Like There’s No Tomorrow

Sunblock needs to be applied several times throughout the day. At the most, sunblock is only good for a couple of hours. If you’re wondering why you’re getting sunburned despite applying a heavy coat of sunblock in the morning, chances are you’re not applying it in the afternoon.

Waterproof? Not!

No sunblock is 100% waterproof. Even if you’re just lounging in the sun, your sweat will dilute the coat and eventually make the sunblock ineffective. Water resistant sunblock is only good for around 40 to 80 minutes. After this period, you’ll need to apply another coat.

Use As Much As You Can

We don’t recommend using a whole bottle for one coat. However, most people make the mistake of using a dab and expect it to work the entire day. You will need more than a dot of sunblock to cover your arms, face, back and legs.

Cloudy Days Also Requires Sunblock

For those who get sunburned easily, cloudy days can be problem. Because of this, one should consider using a lighter or weaker bottle of sunblock. Reapplication is still important, but you should only apply a thin to medium coat.

Sunblock sprays are the easiest to apply, compared to sticks or lotion. Some prefer a combination of all three to ensure an even coating. In the end, it all boils down to your personal preference.
